Juneteenth (Freedom Day, Jubilee Day)
Co-op Principle #5 is Education, Training and Information. We seek to educate ourselves and others so that we can help create a just and equitable future for our Co-op Owners and our community.
June 19, 1865 is the day that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas received the news of the Emancipation Proclamation. “It has been recorded that many of the newly freed people began to celebrate with prayers, songs and dancing! June 19th has become known as Juneteenth and for over 150 years African Americans and others have celebrated this occasion.” - A Guide to Juneteenth, YMCA Rock County
As with most celebrations, Juneteenth gatherings are often enhanced with food traditions. “You’ll find soul food favorites like fried chicken, collard greens, and potato salad at any Juneteenth celebration, but it’s the red rice, red sausage, red velvet cake and red fruit punch that really make it an official Juneteenth…” - Why Red Food & Drinks Are Consumed on Juneteenth & 8 Recipes You Can Make at Home, SheKnows Food & Recipes
For those interested in participating locally, community events are planned in Beloit and Stoughton, and YMCA Rock County will co-host an educational event online.
